Plan for Late Summer Bloom with these Cuties
(Mind the Gap!)

Hiya campers! It’s warming up! We just hit eighty-two (for a day) and my garden is popping, absolutely florgasmic!  You go to Home Depot, Lowe’s, or preferably your local independent garden center and load up on everything in bloom and… by late summer the show ends. No intermission. Two months pass and mums come in. Today, class, we are going to focus on some new Terra Nova breeding; compact Anemones that fill this gap blooming in July and August with the Heleniums and Helianthus. What’s the matter with Anemones? They run. I had an Anemone ‘Honorine Jobert’ that found every nook and cranny (what’s a cranny?) and spread to a bright but unruly mass in a few years. Bad manners? You are outta my garden! By using new species and breeding techniques the wizards of the brush have created some wonderful, shorter varieties that don’t run. Mix these with other whites and pinks like Agastache ‘Pink Pearl’ and you’ll have some late-season flower power to fill the gap. These little gems are the first Anemones to share a community pot as they don’t take over the container. They’re not fussy about soil and are happy with moderate watering. Anemones produce a lot of pollen, which is important for the bees to store and also provide nectar for passing butterflies. If you have not seen Echinacea ‘French Tips,’ you’ll be missing another late-blooming perennial that is very compatible with the colors of these Anemones. Come explore three remarkable offerings by the innovators: Terra Nova.

Anemone SATIN DOLL™ ‘Blush’

Abundant, large, dogwood-like flowers held just over the glossy foliage. Doesn't have a large footprint in the garden and runs less than other varieties on the market. One of the earliest blooming with an extended bloom period. Exceptionally high flower count on genetically dwarf plants. You can expect the blooming period from July to October. The multitudinous flowers rise to seventeen inches high on a globe-like mound seventeen inches across. Hardy in USDA Zones four to nine and is showy in outdoor containers or en masse in a semi-shady to bright garden location. The morning sun is best, and it will take part-shade, especially in the south.  Excellent foliage cover, beautiful in pots.

Anemone HARLEQUIN™ ‘Pastel’

A most charming, bouquet branching type. Mid-pink, semi double flowers are held in substantial numbers starting in late July and continuing until frost. An exceptionally tight base helps give this exciting addition to our Anemone lineup a very distinct appearance. You can expect the blooming period from July to October. The multitudinous flowers rise to eighteen inches high on a globe-like mound twelve inches across. Hardy in USDA Zones four to nine and is showy in outdoor containers or en masse in a semi-shady to bright garden location. The morning sun is best, and it will take partial shade, especially in the south. Excellent foliage cover, beautiful in pots.

Tremendous in containers and as a border plant!

Anemone HARLEQUIN™ ‘Cameo’

Truly a living bouquet of flowers! Leathery, deep green foliage forms a perfect mound in spring and early summer, followed by an explosion of bright pink fluted flowers in great profusion. Flowers are held in a perfect bouquet for several months in the summer, until fall. It is extremely easy to grow and doesn't spread in rampant fashion. The cool pink flowers rise to twenty-six inches high on an upright but compact habit, eighteen inches wide by fourteen inches high. The Harlequin™ series is taller than the SATIN DOLL™ series. Pollinators love this plant due to its nectar-rich flowers that bloom over an extended period from July to October. Hardy in USDA zones four to nine.
