Natural Bug Repellents: Protect Your Garden and Yourself
Natural Bug Repellents: Protect Your Garden and Yourself
By Laura Root, Senior Merchant at Park Seed
Warm weather brings beautiful gardens and outdoor adventures, but it also invites unwelcome guests—pesky insects that can damage plants and ruin time spent outside. While chemical repellents may seem like an easy fix, nature provides its own solutions for keeping bugs at bay. By strategically planting natural repellents and using plant-based insect control methods, you can enjoy a thriving garden and bug-free outdoor space.
Bug-Repelling Plants for Your Garden
Certain plants naturally deter insects due to their strong scents and natural oils. By incorporating these into your landscape, you create a protective barrier against common garden pests while enhancing your outdoor space with beautiful, aromatic greenery.
Lavender
A favorite for its soothing fragrance, lavender repels mosquitoes, moths, and flies. Its essential oils are known to be effective natural insect deterrents. Plant lavender along walkways or near seating areas to create a fragrant and bug-free environment.
Marigolds
Marigolds are reliable and colorful season-long bloomers but, did you know, they produce a compound called pyrethrum, a natural insecticide that deters mosquitoes, aphids, and even nematodes in the soil?
Basil
This kitchen staple adds flavor to dishes and also repels mosquitoes and flies. Plant basil near outdoor seating areas or in containers by doorways to discourage pests.
Citronella Grass
Known as the source of citronella oil, this plant naturally repels mosquitoes. Unlike citronella candles, which burn off quickly, the plant provides long-term protection when placed around patios and decks.
Mint
Aromatic and easy to grow, mint repels ants, mosquitoes, and flies. Keep it in pots to prevent it from spreading aggressively in your garden.
Rosemary
This herb is a natural deterrent for mosquitoes and other insects. Tossing some rosemary sprigs into a fire pit or grill can help keep bugs away while adding a pleasant aroma to the air.
Chrysanthemums
Containing natural pyrethrins, chrysanthemums are excellent at repelling fleas, roaches, bedbugs, and ants. They work well as border plants to keep pests away from vegetable gardens.
Petunias
Often called the "natural pesticide," petunias deter aphids, tomato hornworms, and leafhoppers. Plant them near vegetables to help protect your crops.
Natural Ways to Protect Yourself from Biting Insects
While plants do an excellent job of keeping pests out of your garden, personal protection is just as important when spending time outdoors. Instead of relying on harsh chemical sprays, try these natural alternatives.
Essential Oil-Based Repellents
Many plant-based oils have natural insect-repelling properties:
Lemon Eucalyptus Oil: Recommended by the CDC as an effective mosquito repellent.
Tea Tree Oil: Deters mosquitoes, lice, and biting flies.
Peppermint Oil: Effective against ants, spiders, and mosquitoes.
Natural Sprays Like Cedarcide
Cedarcide is a plant-based repellent derived from cedar oil, a natural insect deterrent that is non-toxic to humans and pets. It works by disrupting the pheromones of insects, making it an effective barrier against mosquitoes, fleas, and ticks. Plus, it’s free of synthetic chemicals, making it a great eco-friendly option.
Protective Clothing
Wearing light-colored, loose-fitting clothing can make you less attractive to mosquitoes. Long sleeves and pants also provide a physical barrier against biting insects.
Eliminating Standing Water
Mosquitoes breed in standing water, so emptying birdbaths, clogged gutters, and plant saucers regularly can drastically reduce their populations.
DIY Herbal Insect Spray
Make your own insect repellent using natural ingredients:
½ cup witch hazel or apple cider vinegar
½ cup water
20 drops citronella, eucalyptus, or lavender essential oil Mix in a spray bottle and apply before heading outdoors.
A Holistic Approach to Pest Control
Combine pest-repelling plants with natural insect deterrents to create a multi-layered defense against garden pests and biting insects. These natural solutions help maintain a healthy, chemical-free outdoor space.
With thoughtful planning and a little help from nature, you can enjoy your garden and outdoor activities—without the bugs!
