As the leaves fall around much of the country, it’s a perfect time for homeowners to begin thinking about mulching, an important lawn care activity that is often automatically associated with the fall season.
Many do not realize the health benefits of mulching – turf and human health benefits – encouraged year round as an important piece of the lawn care repertoire.
John Deere shares the following benefits to mulching as you continue to work toward a healthy, green lawn come spring.
Encourage Growth. When you mulch properly, cutting only 1/3 off the top of the blades of grass and creating fine clippings, nitrogen is returned to the soil. Anywhere from 10 to 25 percent of nitrogen can be returned to the soil through clipping decomposition, helping provide nutrients to your lawn.
Moisture Retention. Mulching returns clippings to the soil, forming a thin insulating layer. This helps to provide protection from temperature swings, and creates a water retention mechanism to help stabilize conditions in the upper layer of the soil.
Save Your Back. When you mulch, you no longer need to dump clippings from the bagger. Mulching a thin layer of leaves is also a great alternative to raking, saving your muscles some aches and pains.
Additionally, John Deere offers a MulchControl™ kit option on select residential riding and zero-turn radius mowers. This mower deck option enables users to easily change from mulching to side discharge or bagging by simply moving a lever making mowing more efficient while keeping clippings out of driveways, sidewalks and flowerbeds.
