Picture it... the perfect autumn day surrounded by crisp air, bright blue skies, and a rich palette of colors that you can only find in the fall. In many ways it’s the perfect time to travel, especially in New England.

From the picturesque cobblestone streets of Nantucket to the old-fashioned cider mills of Vermont, New England is brimming with classic beauty and unique charm.

Here, rich American history is woven into vibrant modern cities like Boston, Providence, and Newport. Cape Cod and the beautiful island of Martha's Vineyard are popular summer retreats celebrated for their sandy beaches on the mighty Atlantic Ocean. The rugged coast of Maine is dotted with weathered harbors offering fresh lobster and delicious seafood. And the nostalgic small towns nestled in New Hampshire's White Mountains showcase some of the country's most beautiful scenery.  And it all truly comes alive during the autumn season.

Coastal

Behold the watercolor vistas of the coast during the fall. Feel the cool breeze on your face as you relax to the sounds of chirping birds and the rolling surf.

Cities

The vibrancy of North America’s great cities comes alive in the fall. The pleasant air brightens the spirit, and the turning leaves enrich the already colorful atmosphere.

Mountains

The vivid pigments of fall brush the mountainsides, and stunning sunsets burst with hues of red, yellow, and orange, lighting up the sky.

Enterprising travelers should not limit themselves. Here are some surprising foliage destinations...

The Rockies

This fall, follow the "yellow brick road" of sorts through Colorado as the bold quaking aspens blanket the mountain sides. Traverse the mountain range, taking in sights like the Colorado National Monument and Rocky Mountain National Park. A journey on the Pike's Peak Cog Railway will lead you through the aspen forests on its ascent to the top, reaching more than 14,000 feet above sea level.

Mackinac Island

With over 80 percent of the land preserved by Mackinac State Park, Michigan, the island becomes a wooded paradise of vibrant fall foliage. Take in the sights aboard a horse-drawn carriage, which leads them leisurely through tree-lined paths and a quaint town center.

And Even China

The cool autumn temperatures bring much needed relief from the hot Chinese summer, making it an ideal time for those on the hunt for a breathtaking fall foliage experience. Exploring the ancient city and iconic landmarks like Tiananmen Square, Summer Palace and the Forbidden City at leisure. Stand atop the Great Wall of China and take in the vibrant red, yellow and orange shades of the smoke trees, maples and persimmons.

Visit these destinations where you can don your sweaters, sip apple cider (or other local treats), and nibble on anything and everything pumpkin.
